Choosing the mill, jar and grinding media
Effective grinding means choosing three things at once: the mill type, the jar material and the grinding media (balls). This guide shows how to combine them and gives example fineness results achievable for different materials.
Three decisions
- Mill type — by target fineness and batch size. For routine grinding the QM roller mills are enough. Very fine granulation (around 0.1 µm), dry or wet, comes from the XQM planetary ball mills. Fast, ultra-fine sample prep is the job of the vibration mill, and wet grinding down to nano the job of the stirred (bead) mill.
- Jar — harder than the sample, chemically compatible. The material and volume range is on the ball-mill grinding jars page.

Example grinding results
The values below are example results obtained on mills of this class (planetary and stirred) — use them as a reference point; the real outcome depends on the sample, the charge and the time.

The recurring pattern is a planetary mill with a zirconia jar and zirconia balls in wet grinding — the most common and most effective set-up for sub-micron fineness.
